These tubes contain a gel barrier and an additive of spray-dried lithium heparin.

The inert barrier separates the plasma from the blood cells during centrifugation, which
prevents the plasma from becoming contaminated. In plasma, certain analytes such as potassium, phosphorus and glucose must be separated from the blood cells within a couple of hours; otherwise, the results are significantly affected.

Clinical evaluation of specific chemical constituents such as therapeutic drugs, proteins, peptides, steroids and vitamins indicates a high degree of stability in BD PSTTM II tubes.1, 2
The main advantages of gel tubes compared with tubes without gel are:
• A stable barrier between plasma and clotted blood during
transport and storage, resulting in improved analyte stability.
• Better sample quality.
• Workflow optimization: short centrifugation time,
sample processing and archiving in the primary tube.
• No need for secondary tubes, reducing the risk of misidentification.

Effects of temperature BD Vacutainer® PSTTM II tubes should be stored at 4–25 °C and protected from direct sunlight during storage. Cooling the tube in connection with or during centrifugation can affect movement.
Optimal separation of sediment and plasma is achieved at a temperature of 20–25 °C.
Mixing tubes To avoid microclotting, the BD Vacutainer® PSTTM II tube should be mixed by inverting it 8–10 times immediately after the blood sample has been collected.
